Dab's Angel October 2008
Rev. Harvey Carr

Reverend Dr. Harvey Carr - October 2008
It is with great pleasure we announce Reverend Dr. Harvey Carr as Dab's Angel for October 2008.

Dr. Carr was ordained in 1968, at the age of 19 upon graduation from a small conservative Southern Baptist College in Mississippi (now defunct), with a double major of Bible and Church Music. He holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion from Canterbury University of Hyde, Chester, England and a Doctor of Music (cum laude) from Ashwood Conservatory of Music, New York City, New York.

Considering himself to be an Ecumenical Christian, Dr. Carr has served as a missionary to the State of Montana, and as Associate Pastor, Interim Pastor, Pastor of Music and Arts, Pastor of Outreach Ministries, Youth Pastor, Organist/Choirmaster and/or Artist in Residence in several different denominations in Mississippi, Montana, Tennessee and Florida. He has also traveled extensively since 1966 as a religious concert organist/vocalist and speaker.

A published poet, essayist and author of religious works, he is completing 2 manuscripts, Contemptus Mundi, refuting the decree of a pope of the Middle Ages that man is nothing but “fetid sperm” and an extensive study on the Ten Commandments entitled The Dignity and Freedom in God’s Law, both to be released in 2009.

In addition to his ministry as Interim Pastor at St. Luke’s Community Church, Dr. Carr is actively involved in the City of Jacksonville serving as Pastoral Counselor for St. John’s Horizon House, a local Supportive-Living Facility for those with HIV/AIDS; the Inter-Faith Based Advisory Group; the Minority AIDS Coalition; and he serves as a member of the World AIDS Week Committee. His most recent previous pastoral staff position was at Christ Church of Peace in Jacksonville where he served as Pastor of Worship Arts and Pastor of Community Outreach, serving with the late Rev. Gary DeBusk.

Dr. Carr has been actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS since the early 1980’s serving on the first Buddy Program in Memphis, Tennessee. He became involved in the fight because of seeing many of his friends struggling in the early days of the disease when medicines were not readily available and there were more questions than answers as to what was causing the “gay cancer.” Upon his move to Chicago in the mid-1980s he became active in several AIDS organizations, assisting in the annual AIDS Walk and other fund-raising and educational programs. He has spoken at numerous rallies and World AIDS Day events as a PLWA, having been diagnosed in 2000. Dr. Carr says that he finds by being actively involved in HIV/AIDS programs, he does not have time to think about his own illness, choosing to focus on helping others fighting the illness. He does admit he has found he must sometimes admit he is no longer 20 years of age and must pace himself so that he can maintain his health so that he can be effective in areas of work he has chosen and to which he feels God has directed him.

In June 2000, Dr. Carr moved to St. Augustine to be with his spouse, Barry Snyder, where they share a home in St. Augustine Shores.

When he has some spare time he enjoys reading, writing, working in his gardens and cooking.

For these and many more reasons, we are proud to announce Reverend Dr. Harvey Carr as Dab's Angel for October 2008.
