Tami Haught - March
It is with great honor we announce Tami Haught as our Dab the AIDS Bear's Angel for March 2011.

Tami,(in pic on left with Jordan Selha, director of the AIDS Project of Central Iowa).grew up in rural Iowa and graduated from Plainfield High School, with a class of 27 people. During the late 80's, she heard about HIV/AIDS, but never believed it would happen to her. HIV/AIDS was not here in small town Iowa. HIV/AIDS did not happen to someone like her.

She now tells people "You HAVE to believe it can happen to you before you change your behaviors." HIV/AIDS is the only thing in this world that truly is non-discriminatory.

Tami did not tell anyone my status for 6 years, the weight and the burden of this secret, which is such an important part of her life was so heavy. They told everyone her husband died of cancer, because if you have cancer people care, if they find out you are positive they judge. She finally started speaking out when my son, now 14 years old, was in preschool. Tami has been speaking out ever since.

She is the President of PITCH -- Positive Iowans Taking Charge, a member of CHAIN -- Community HIV/Hepatitis Advocates of Iowa Network, the Iowa Community Planning Group, Midwest AIDS Policy Alliance, and have recently joined the PLWHA Caucus. Tami is also one of our Dab the AIDS Bear's Ambassadors of Hope.

She has had the honor of receiving the Caring Link award from CHAIN, Recognized as an Outstanding Policy Advocate from the Partnership of Better Health, and in 2010 Tami received The Keeper of the Wings Award from the Community AIDS Assistance Project (CAAP).

Tami feels she is very blessed to be able to do the advocacy and other volunteer work she does. She feels so lucky to have my supportive family beside her in this fight for access to treatment and care.

For these and many more reasons, we are honored to announce Tami Haught as our Dab the AIDS Bear's Angel for March 2011.
